1. Who We Are

Where Am I (WAI) is an Android application developed by juanbulls. It consists of two components: a Wear OS app for GPS tracking on your smartwatch, and a companion Android phone app for reviewing synced tracks. This Privacy Policy applies to both components.

2. Data We Collect

Where Am I collects the following data to provide its core functionality:

Precise GPS location (foreground and background): Used to display your position on the offline map, record GPS tracks, calculate speed, distance, and altitude during active tracking sessions.
Altitude / barometric sensor data (if available): Used to display and record elevation information during tracking sessions.
Track session data: GPS coordinates, timestamps, speed, distance, and elevation recorded during tracking sessions. Stored locally in GPX and JSON format on your device.

We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, device identifiers, or any other personally identifiable information.

3. How We Use Your Data

All data collected by Where Am I is used exclusively to provide the app's features:

Displaying your real-time GPS position on offline maps
Recording and saving GPS tracks (routes) as GPX files on your device
Calculating and displaying speed, distance, and altitude metrics
Transferring recorded tracks from your Wear OS watch to your companion phone app via the local Wearable Data Layer (Bluetooth/Wi-Fi between your own devices)
Displaying track history, elevation profiles, and speed charts within the app

4. Local Storage

All GPS tracks, session data, and app settings are stored exclusively on your device's local storage. This includes:

GPX files saved in the app's private files directory on your Wear OS watch and companion phone
A JSON index of your recorded sessions
App preferences (unit system, map theme) stored in DataStore on your device

This data never leaves your personal devices unless you explicitly choose to export or share it using your device's native sharing features.

5. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not share, sell, rent, or transmit your data to any third parties, advertisers, or external servers. There are no analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or crash reporting services embedded in this application.

The only data transfer that occurs is between your own Wear OS watch and your own Android phone, over the local Wearable Data Layer API (Google's peer-to-peer communication channel between paired devices you own).

6. Offline Maps

Where Am I uses offline map files (in Mapsforge format) sourced from mapsforge.org and Geofabrik, which are based on OpenStreetMap data. These map files are downloaded by you on demand and stored locally on your device. No location data is sent to these services during normal app use.

7. Permissions

Where Am I requests the following Android permissions and uses them solely as described:

ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION: Required to obtain GPS coordinates for map positioning and track recording.
ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION: Required to continue recording your GPS track when the app is running as a foreground service and the watch screen is off during an active tracking session.
FOREGROUND_SERVICE / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_LOCATION: Required to run the GPS tracking service as a foreground service, ensuring reliable track recording during your activity.
BODY_SENSORS (Wear OS): Used to access the barometric pressure sensor, if available, to improve altitude accuracy.
INTERNET / RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: Used only for downloading offline map files on demand when you choose to do so.

8. Data Retention and Deletion

Your GPS tracks and session data are stored locally on your device for as long as you keep the app installed or until you manually delete them. You can delete individual track sessions directly within the app at any time using the swipe-to-delete gesture in the track history screen.

Uninstalling the app will remove all app data from your device.

9. Children's Privacy

Where Am I is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us and we will take steps to remove that information.

10. Security

Since all data is stored locally on your device and never transmitted to external servers, the security of your data depends on the security of your device. We recommend using your device's built-in security features (screen lock, encryption) to protect your data.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
